distinctness & availability

Growth can involve becoming more distinct from something that previously defined you, then learning to relate to it differently.

Many stories about human maturity treat growth as a one-way march out of dependence and into solitary self-sufficiency. In that telling, we begin life entangled in the expectations of family, culture, and tribe, and we prove our adulthood by cutting the cords until nobody can tell us who to be. Connection is quietly cast as the childhood condition we outgrow, while independence is crowned as the summit.

Yet anyone who has lived inside that solitary fortress knows how thin the air becomes over time. Robert Kegan offers a richer geometry of human becoming. Growth is not a straight line away from other people; it is a lifelong movement between separation and connection, where each makes the next depth of the other possible. To relate to a person, a role, or a tradition, you must first become distinct from it. So long as you are completely fused with another person’s approval, you are not actually in a relationship with two participants; you are absorbed inside a single shared outline.

Stepping back to discover your own voice, values, and boundaries is a necessary movement of separation. At first, that differentiation can feel risky, as if drawing a clear outline around yourself might push the people you love further away. What relational ethics helps us see is that becoming distinct is the very precondition for deeper intimacy. Once you no longer need the other person to mirror your every opinion in order to feel intact, you are finally free to meet them as they actually are.

Independence and connection do not have to cancel each other out. You can step out of an old pattern of automatic compliance without stepping out of love. When you learn to voice a different preference while remaining warm, attentive, and emotionally present, separation stops looking like abandonment and becomes the ground of a more honest bond.
